History of the Rezangla
In the epic battle of Rezang La, during the 1962 Indo Chinese conflict, out of 120 Veer Ahirs of C Company 13 Kumaon, 114 were martyred. Of the six survivors, five were severely injured and captured by the Chinese, out of whom four managed to escape. One wonders , how did these ill-clad, ill-equipped, and bereft of artillery support infantrymen of the Kumaon Regiment fought under the freezing temperature, the way they did?
And yet Yadhuvanshi Ahirs fought like no other warriors have done since ancient times, and hence, this battle has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the world’s top eight battles for collective bravery!
13 Kumaon was moved from Baramula on 2 October 1962 to Leh under 114 Infantry Brigade. On 24 October, B and C Companies of 13 Kumaon were moved to Chushul and rushed to Mugger Hill and Rezang La feature without proper acclimatization and winter clothing. The Chinese offensive in this Sector started on 17/18 November. The major part of the Chinese effort of two regiments fell against C Company of Maj Shaitan Singh of 13 Kumaon. Around 2200 hrs, a heavy snowstorm leashed Rezangla for nearly four hours. After the snowstorm, at 0200 hours, a large body of Chinese soldiers swarming through the gullies at a distance of about 700-800 meters, was observed by the patrols of 7 and 8 Platoons. Major Shaitan Singh immediately contacted his platoon commanders and ordered them to occupy their battle positions. Around 0500 hrs, the first wave of the Chinese attack was met with a hail of CMGs and MMGs fire of the Veer Kumaonis.
All the approaches leading to Rezang La were full of Chinese corpses and the wounded. The Chinese launched five more attacks that were beaten back. These attacks also dwindled the strength of defenders. After the lull for regrouping, the Chinese started shelling the Rezang La post with punishing Artillery fire, which took a heavy toll on the defenders who were fighting from open trenches with no overhead cover. Due to terrain remoteness and no communication, no help or reinforcement was asked for, and none could be provided.
Major Shaitan Singh was hit by the enemy’s LMG fire on his arm. But undaunted, he kept reorganizing and motivating his handful men. He was again hit severely in the abdomen. This Valiant Soldier, who motivated his troops to fight till the end, froze to martyrdom
When Rezang La was revisited in January next year by a local Ladakhi Shephard, after the thaw, almost all jawans were found frozen in the trenches, still holding on to their weapons as if they still were waiting for the enemy to come. The battle was so fierce that more than 500 Chinese soldiers had perished in this attack.
Major Shaitan Singh was awarded the highest gallantry award of Param Veer Chakra!
The stand by the Veer Kumaonis is a subject taught on collective bravery and leadership in all leading management schools of the country .
